How do our bodies create space in the city? Rosie Plunkett and Yoichi Ishida explore spatial practice, representation of space, and the sense of belonging and community in the urban public space.
For this event, they’ll carry out two performances in Battersea Reach. One performance involves producing a new space by walking in the public space, and the other involves documenting the walk and space by paying attention to the activities of the city.
Both performances follow specific instructions developed in response to Battersea Reach. For example, in our previous performances in Nine Elms, one instruction was to walk in a square tracing existing marks on the ground until 36 people passed through the space. This instruction was designed to produce a new space through the pattern of walking that is partly out of sync with the way in which most people used the area. The other instruction was to pay attention to an historically important road behind the camera and to trip the shutter whenever you see someone crossing the road until a roll of film was finished. In Harvest (Battersea Reach), they will extend our performances by bringing more performers and by producing a zine to consolidate our documentation and research.
