Go Back for Murder Review

By Emma

What are the costs of uncovering the truth? Is there such a thing as complete justice? Is the fight still worth it after numerous years?

Agatha Christie’s ‘Go Back for Murder’ at Putney Arts Theatre poses these thought-provoking questions and delves into them by exploring the complexities of human nature. This murder-mystery show follows Carla Crale, who is determined to clear her mother’s name in the murder of her father. Carla’s passion and wittiness drives the investigation forward and immediately engages the audience. Several features of this production contribute to its depth, the most notable being the minimalistic set and intelligent staging, which amplify the rawness of this piece of theatre.

Walking into the auditorium, I was immediately transported to an all-white atelier, sparsely decorated with furniture covered by dust blankets. Though not extravagant, I found that this humble yet innovative design worked perfectly for the show, seamlessly incorporating aspects of the father’s artistic storyline and the daughter’s journey. What struck me in particular was the concept of removing the dust blankets when new information was revealed, symbolising the uncovering of hidden truths.

Time is perhaps the most important and evident theme in the show. The use of dual casting, where characters from the present are mirrored by past versions of themselves played by different actors, brilliantly underscores the passage of years. It allows the audience to see how each character has evolved and adds depth to their motivations and personalities. This clever creative decision also fully immersed the audience in the unfolding drama. An especially evocative moment that stayed with me was when a chilling game of hide and seek between the younger version of Carla and her parents was completed at the end, visualising how the truth has been revealed and uncovered. Moments like this, filled with symbolism, made the show extra special.

One of the most compelling aspects of the production was the performances of the cast. All of the actors on stage brought remarkable depth and nuance to their characters. Both the joyful and darker scenes were executed delicately, showcasing impressive versatility.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this marvellous piece of theatre, and am honoured to have been able to review it.
