Serene Sounds: A Classical Sound Bath Experience Review

By Nadia

Visiting the ‘Classical Sound Bath Experience’ was the best Friday evening I’ve had in a long time. While mostly consisting of classical music, this unique experience used instruments, voices and large, black curtains to create a calming atmosphere. I’m glad that finding the location was the hardest part of the evening, because for the next hour, I was surrounded by relaxing sounds that brought pure bliss.

Although being listed as 12+, the majority of the participants were older. Initially, it was intimidating (and unexpected) to be surrounded by adult participants. However, after starting with a poem and inviting everyone to close their eyes, any remaining tensions were eased. The real experience began with a beautiful piano piece that was like a lullaby, allowing the unwinding to truly begin. A short while later, the piano was accompanied by the voice of Eleanor Penfold, the soprano, that was so soothing a woman near me started to snore. Slowly, more and more people began to sleep, allowing themselves to be drifted away by the sounds of keys being played. The experience continued with several piano pieces, played by Elena Toponogova, only taking a break to use instruments such as a triangle and rain stick. During the final quarter of the experience, everyone including myself, managed to sleep soundly.

After a week of pure exam stress, the soft sounds of the piano and angelic voice of the host was able to provide some relief. To everyone’s disappointment, the evening ended too soon and found attendees hesitant to leave; but the smiles signalled that, like me, everyone had thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Overall,  joining WAF at the ‘Classical Sound Bath Experience’ was the best (and most relaxing) way to end a hard week.
